Can a partially melted handgun be repaired?
My home burnt down some time ago and I had several handguns that were in a fireproof safe that wasn’t so fireproof. A couple of them got hot enough to only melt the grips and the plasic on them but still rendered them unoperable. How much heat could they stand? One is a Model 669 S&W 9mm and it got the worst which left only charred material and metal and the other was a 22 caliber browning pistol buck mark. The browning I have disassembled down to the frame and trigger mechanism I need a gunsmith to finish the dissasembly and replace a few parts and reassemble. Being as these guns have had considerable damage done to them I really don’t want to spend alot of money on them. The Browning looks like it can be fixed really easy with the right knowledge. Any input or gunsmith suggestions would be much appreciated.

Jeff makes good points. Yes it can be done but,to what expense. A used Buckmark goes for around 125-150.00 around here..in real good condition. To refinish a pistol will run you over 100.00 and more if its done right. Buy another. The heat on all the small parts in that gun will require them to be replaced. That’s the 411….its you call. Sorry for your loss.

I’d expect the frames and other metal to be brittle after exposure to high heat like your went through. High heat will draw temper from springs…

Were they insured? I’d call it a day and replace them.

What was the fire rating on your safe… did the safe maker claim any warrenty for damages?

2 words…Insurance Claims.

I wouldn`t try to fire them. The steel has lost it`s temper. I`m sorry for your loss, but you now have wall hangers or paper weights. The bores will not be true, and all parts will have to be replaced and some reheat treated to be safe to use.

Those weapons are toast all the internal parts and springs are ruined and the frames, cylinders and barrels have undergone a chemical composition change where there is a real danger those weapons will explode if fired.

the high heat would have taken the tempering out of the metal, making it brittle and unsafe. Let a competent gunsmith take a look. Most homeowners or renters insurance will cover up to $1000.00 in firearms, but hopefully you added a waiver for more coverage. I know this is like closing the barn door after the horse got out, but you can take any safe and add additional fire rating to it simply by lining it top to bottom with standard dry wall board. just don’t leave any gaps at the seams. Best of luck, I learned the hard way to in a house fire many years ago.

What you need is a competent gunsmith to examine them and determine the extent of the damage and feasibility of restoration. They aren’t necessarily ruined but you need someone with experience to make the call.

I’m sorry my friend, but those guns can’t be salvaged. If they got hot enough to screw with the temper of the frame/barrel/other components, then It’s been effectively rendered unsafe. Keep them as a memento, but don’t try to rebuild them.

At this point, it wouldn’t be worth it.
